Offical Fan Blogger: Celebrating Opening Night at Victory Field

Despite the rain, the spirits of those attending the Indianapolis Indians’ season opener at Victory Field last Friday night were not dampened in the least.

“I’m having a great time, this is a fantastic atmosphere,” Indians fan Shannon Elkins said. “I was worried a little bit at first because of the rain, but other than that, we’re good!”

It was no surprise that the Indians set a new Victory Field home opener attendance record that night. 14,073 fans attended the game against the Toledo Mud Hens.

From first-time ballpark visitors to loyal season ticket holders, everyone enjoyed the excitement of Opening Night.

“We have been coming to Victory Field since it opened,” fans Alyssa and Amber Overton shared with us from their picnic spot on the lawn. Both girls were even festively decked out for the game with “Go Indians” written in the eye black on their faces.

The Overtons weren’t the only ones at the game who dressed to support the Indians. Alex Chael sported an Indians jersey with his own last name on the back- you can get your personalized jersey made at the Indians gift shop.

“If I played, I’d be shortstop,” he said.

The Indians could even count on him in a pinch – a loyal fan, Chael has been attending Indians games for 15 years. This year, he is especially excited to see what great plays this season’s roster produces.

“[My favorite player on the roster this year is Starling] Marte. It’s a shame to lose McCutchen, but he signed a huge deal, that’s awesome,” Chael said.

Fellow Indians fan Scott Brody agrees that the Indians have a strong roster this year.

As a top prospect, Starling Marte will be closely watched by both fans and the Pirates this season.

“[My favorite player is] Gorkys Hernandez- I think he’s got a lot of potential,” Brody said. “[I’m excited] that the Indians have a really competitive team this year, and I’m excited to come out and watch that.”

Beyond baseball, Victory Field also offers plenty of reasons to take your family out the ballgame.

“I think this our third year now doing the flex pass voucher plan,” Kyle Page said from his game-watching spot in the Captain Morgan’s Cove. “[I like] the atmosphere, the crowd is great, the environment is fun, it really is a good time to meet and talk with people.”

Another fan favorite is the different menu options Victory Field offers.

“The food is good… We always get the nachos, the loaded nachos,” Amber Overton said.

It was agreed by all fans, though, that the exciting atmosphere at Victory Field was definitely what keeps them coming back as well as looking forward to future visits.

“I’m looking forward to [the game on July] 4th, it’s going to be a good time, fireworks on Fridays, like tonight,” Elkins said.
